楽しみは極むべからず
ー楽不可極ー 礼記 曲礼上（五礼（吉・凶・賓・軍・嘉）の総説）
（礼記：四十四篇。周末秦漢時代の礼に関する理論及び実際を記録編集したもの。
前漢の戴聖によって伝えられた。「小戴礼」又は「戴記」といわれる。五経の一つ）
｛原文｝
敖不可長、
欲不可従。
志不可満、
楽不可極。
｛書き下し文｝
敖は長ずべからず、
欲は従にすべからず。
志は満たしむべからず、
楽しみは極むべからず。
楽しみは極むべからず
｛意解｝
すべて物事には「程々に」がよい。
おごりを募らせてはいけない。
欲望に溺れてしまってはいけない。
志は完全に満たされることを求めてはいけない。
歓楽は限りを尽くしてはいけない。
「敖，欲，志，楽」いずれにおいても，限度を設け，とどまることを知ることが大切であるというのである。人生には楽しみが必要である。長寿に恵まれ真面目に生きてきたお年寄りが、「私のような生き方は、人様にはお勧めできませんな」と述懐していた。
人生は短い。 その短い人生にこれといった楽しみがなく、あくせく働く事だけで終わってしまうようなら、 何のための人生ぞや、だ。
せっかくの人生、 一度の人生、楽しむことも必要である。
問題は、その楽しみ方である。 例えばゴルフに行ったとする。誰でも「ああ、いいなぁ」と思い、 できたらゴルフ三昧の生活を一週間でも続けてみたいと願うだろう。 だが、暇を見つけてたまに行くから楽しいのであって、毎日そんなことをしていれば、
楽しみどころか、 かえって味気ない思いが募るだけかもしれない。 楽しみごとは、のめり込めばかえって苦しみを増す。「楽しみは極むべからず」で、 程々が良いようだ。
古文真宝 秋風辞に「歓楽極まって哀情多し」とある。意のままに何でもできる立場にある武帝ですら、楽しみの影に忍び寄る「哀情」を如何ともできなかった。これが人生というものかも知れない。楽しみに溺れて無駄に時を過ごしてはならないということでもある。
