第一章
貪らざるを以って宝と為す
ー以不貪為宝ー 左氏伝 襄公一五年
【左伝：三十巻。「春秋左氏伝」の略。魯の左丘明の撰と伝えられている。
「春秋」の注釈書で「左氏伝」ともいう。十三経の一つ】
原文：
我以不貪為宝、
爾以玉為宝。
若以與我、皆喪宝也。
不若人有其宝。
書き下し文：
我は貪らざるを以って宝と為し、
爾は玉を以って宝と為す。
若し以って我に與えば、皆 宝を喪うなり。
人 其の宝を有するに若かず。
貪らざるを以って宝と為す
意解：
むかし、宋の国の子罕という宰相は、この言葉を座右の銘にしていたという。
ある男が粗玉を入手して子罕に献上しようとした。子罕が断ったところ、男は、「玉造の職人に見てもらいましたら、磨けばたいそうな宝石になるとのこと。それであなたさまに差し上げようと思いまして」
子罕はこう答えたという。「我は貪らざるを以って宝と為す。爾は玉を以って宝と為す。
もし以って我に与えば、皆、宝を喪うなり。人 其の宝を有するに若かず。」
後段の下りを訳せば、そなたが宝としているその玉をわしにくれてしまったのでは、そなたはせっかくの玉を失い、わたしもまた、自分の宝としている「貪らず」を失ってしまう。だから、そなたもわたしも、それぞれ自分の宝を大切にしているほうがよいだろう。というのだ。
物欲、名誉欲、独占欲過ぎれば禍の基となる。「無欲であること」も禍を避ける一つの方法だろう。
老子 第46章に「禍は足るを知らざるよりも大なるはなし」とある。欲望をちらつかせて他人を煽ることより大きい罪はなく、満足を知らないことより大きな災いはなく、欲しがることより大きな過ちはない。ゆえに、足るを知るとは あるがままの現実に常に満足することだと云っている。
