天道是か非か
ー天道是邪非邪ー 史記 伯夷列伝
（史記：百三十巻。前漢の司馬遷が撰した、中国最初の通史です。
上古の黄帝から、漢の武帝までの歴史を紀伝体で記しています。）
中国人は昔から「天道」（天の摂理）の存在を信じ、「天道は親なし、常に善人に与す」
天道は公平無私であって常に善人に味方すると、自分の心に言い聞かせてきている。
これに重大な疑問を書で投げかけたのが司馬遷である。「天道は、はたして存在するのか」、「史記」の作者、司馬遷が 「伯夷列伝」の末尾にしるしたことばである。
｛原文｝
或曰「天道無親。常与善人。」
若伯夷・叔斉、
可謂善人者、非邪。
積仁絜行如此而餓死。
且七十子之徒、仲尼独薦顏淵為好学。
然回也屡空、糟糠不厭、而卒蚤夭。
天之報施善人其何如哉。
盜蹠日殺不辜、肝人之肉、
暴戻恣雎、聚党数千人、
横行天下、竟以寿終。
是遵何徳哉。 此其尤大彰明較著者也。
若至近世、操行不軌、専犯忌諱、
而終身逸楽富厚、累世不絶、 或択地而蹈之、
時然後出言、 行不由径、非公正不発憤、
而遇禍災者、不可勝数也。余甚惑焉。
儻所謂天道是邪、非邪。

或ひと曰はく、「天道に親 無し。常に善人に与す」と。
伯夷・叔斉の若きは善人と謂ふべき者か非か。
仁を積み行ひの絜こと此くの如くにして餓死せり。
且つ七十子の徒、仲尼は独り顏淵（顔回）を薦めて学を好むと為す。
然るに回（顔回）や屡空しく、糟糠すら厭かずして、
卒 に蚤夭せり。
天の善人に報施すること、其れ何如ぞや。
盜蹠は日に不辜を殺し、人の肉を肝にし、
暴戻恣雎、党を聚むること数千人、
天下に横行するも、竟 に寿を以て終はる。
是れ何の徳に遵 ふや。
此れその尤も大いに彰明較著なる者なり。
近世に至り、操行不軌、
専ら忌諱を犯すも、 終身逸楽富厚に、
累世絶えず、 或は地を択びてこれを蹈み、
時ありて然る後に言を出し、 行くに径に由らず、
公正に非ずんば憤を発せざるも、 憤に遇ふが若き者は、
数ふるに勝ふべからざるなり。余甚だ惑へり。
儻いは所謂天道是か、非か。

｛意解｝
ある人は言った、「天の道は公平無私であって、常に善人の味方である」と。
伯夷・叔斉のような人は善人というべきものだろうか、
そうでないのだろうか。
(ふたりは)人徳にかなった行いを積み重ね、
清廉潔白な行為を行って、而して餓死した。
それに(孔子の)七十人の弟子の内、
仲尼（孔子）はただ顔淵（顔回）だけを学問好きな者として推薦した。
しかし、回（顔回）はしばしば経済的に困窮し、
粗末な食事さえ満足に取れず、とうとう若死にした。
天が善人に報いるとは、いったいどういうことなのか。
盜蹠は毎日罪のない人を殺して人の肉を刺身にして食べ、
乱暴で勝手にふるまい、数千人で徒党を組んで、
天下の中を暴れまわったが、結局天寿を全うした。
これは何の徳によるものだろうか。
これはもっとも(矛盾が)はっきりとしている（彰明較著）物である。
近世になっても、品行が悪くて道に外れ、
もっぱら法で禁止されていることを犯していても、
生涯遊び楽しみ裕福な暮らしをし、子孫代々続いていく者、
あるいは仕えるべき場所を選んで仕え、言うべきときに発言し、
公明正大で、それだけに心を奮い立たせるも、
災難に遭うような者は数え切れないほどである。
(だから)私はひどく戸惑うのである。 もしかすると、
世間で言う天の道ははたして正しいのか正しくないのか。
司馬遷は、漢の武帝の太史令(記録官の長)であったが、「李陵の禍」によって腐刑(宮刑ともいう。去勢する刑罰)に処され、獄に下されている。忠誠の武将であった李陵は、五千の歩兵だけを率いて匈奴征伐 にむかい、文字通りの勇戦敢闘ののち、天漢二年に部隊は全滅し、彼自身は、捕虜にされた。この敗報に皆、李陵を避難したが、 司馬遷のみ、敢然として李陵を弁護したので、 武帝の逆鱗にふれて獄に下された。これが「李陵の禍」である。
正当なことを正当に主張して刑に処された司馬遷は、何物をもたのまず、みずからの手によって、人間の正当な歴史を書きのこそうと決意した。腐刑を受けた人士は、生きながらえるべきではないのに、この決意のため、司馬遷は、あらゆる恥辱にたえて生きのび、懸命に書きつづったのが「史記」である。
通俗編 巻三十八に「好死は悪活に如かず」とある。「好死」とは、立派な死に方、潔い死に方。「悪活」とは、惨めな生き方、見苦しい生き方。そんな生き方でも、とにかく生き抜くほうが「好死」に優っているのだという。日本で言う「死んで花実が咲くものか」に近いニュアンスをもった言葉である。一度きりの人生である。死に急ぐことはないのではないか。司馬遷は、あらゆる恥辱にたえてでも生きのび、人間の正当な歴史を書き残そうと決意し「史記」を紀伝体で残している。

「史記」のような記述の仕方は、中国の歴史書、わけても正史記述の雛形となっている。
日本でも古くから読まれており、元号の出典として採用されている。
